Exhibitions | The
Breath of a Wok
As
a child, Chinese American food writer Grace Young learned from her
father a deep appreciation for wok hay, the prized but elusive
taste that comes only from proper stir-frying in a wok. A desire
to unravel the secrets of the wok lead Young and celebrated photographer
Alan Richardson to China. This exhibition of Richardson's photographs
with text by Young chronicles their journey, offering a captivating
look at the wok, the workhorse of the Chinese kitchen at a time
when traditional Chinese culinary culture is endangered in America,
and increasingly compromised in China. From the earthy photographs
of dai pai dong street cooking in Hong Kong, to the mystical images
of artisan wok makers in Shanghai and Yangshuo, here is a rare glimpse
of the wok as a way of life. This exhibition also includes unique
examples of different styles of woks as well as traditional Chinese
stoves for cooking.
